So, here we are again. In a few short weeks, we’ll be launching my latest ongoing horror comic series. I’ve released a bunch of books in the last couple of years, but it hasn’t been since The Nice House on the Lake began in June 2021 that I’ve kicked off anything of this scale.
W0RLDTR33 is an epic Science Fiction/Horror comic. It tells the story of a group of friends who, back in 1999, discovered the Undernet, a malicious counterpart to the internet that lives beneath the one we know. At great cost, these friends locked it away for twenty-five years. W0RLDTR33 tells the story of what happens when the Undernet breaks back through into a modern age where dangerous ideas can spread faster than they ever have before. This is the book where I plan to say everything I have to say about what I used to dream the internet would become—and everything I fear about what it has actually become. It’s a scary book, and a mean book, but more than anything, it’s a human book about human relationships, family, and how the internet can rip those bonds apart…and what we’re left with when it does.
I’m joined on art by the phenomenal Fernando Blanco, who you probably know from his work on Catwoman and Detective Comics; on colors by the incredible Jordie Bellaire, who also colored Nice House as well as some of the best comics of the last decade; and on letters by THE DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH's Aditya Bidikar, who I consider the best letterer of the modern era.
I’m thinking about W0RLDTR33 as me doing my Stephen King novel. It’s a big story, and we plan on it running for several years. I’ll be trying to match the release cadence of Something is Killing the Children, with five-issue arcs, and then a short three-month break for us to recharge, during which we’ll release the trade paperback, and then onward at a fairly clockwork pace.
While Something is Killing the Children is on a brief pause before our big summer return, THE DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH is on a break before the series comes back this fall, and The Nice House on the Lake concluded with a bit of a cliffhanger, it’s my hope that you can direct the readers of all of these books toward W0RLDTR33 to get the kind of storytelling they’ve come to expect from my titles. SIKTC readers will respond to the striking visuals of our series antagonist, PH34R (pronounced “Fear”), THE DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH readers will lock on to the commentary about what technology and the internet in particular has done to our world, and NHOTL readers will be drawn in by the mysterious relationships between the cast.
W0RLDTR33 is a brutal, scary comic. It starts in a rough place. I hope it strikes a nerve with you and your customers. But I will say, this is one of the most humanist books I’ve written, and the ultimate message isn’t going to be nihilistic. There’s light at the end of a very dark tunnel, and it’s our job as creators to hide that light from you. As the series moves on, you’ll see more of that light through the central cast.
Anyways, I’m insanely proud of this book. I think Fernando, Jordie, and Aditya are doing career-best work, and they’ve all been absolutely phenomenal to work with. I’m hugely glad to be partnering with Image Comics on this title, knowing that I’ll never be asked to pull my punches. I hope you enjoy what we’ve put together, and more than that, I hope it’s successful for you in your shops.
I trust the year is treating you well, and I’m sure you’ll all be hearing from me again soon. After all…who’s to say this is my only Image #1 coming out this year?
